Attenuation and Absorption Lengths of EAS measured with the KASCADE Experiment

چکیده
An analysis of attenuation and absorption lengths of the electron number using data of the KASCADE air shower experiment is presented. The following methods are used to determine these quantities: The method of constant intensity, the attenuation of the electron number at the knee with increasing atmospheric depth, the decrease of the flux at a constant electron number with increasing zenith angle and the variation of the flux with ground pressure. The differences in the results are explained with respect to methodical uncertainties. An estimation of the influence of intrinsic shower fluctuations on the results is given. Attenuation lengths between 175 and 196 g/cm and absorption lengths between 100 and 120 g/cm depending on electron number are obtained.

Confronting the EPOS-LHC model predictions on the charged particle and muon attenuation lengths of EAS with the measurements of the KASCADE-Grande observatory
KASCADE-Grande was an air-shower experiment designed to study cosmic rays between 1016 and 1018 eV. The instrument was located at the site of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany at an altitude of 110m a.s.l. and covered an area of 0.5 km. KASCADE-Grande consisted of several detector systems dedicated to measure different components of the EAS generated by the primary cosmic rays, i.e...
متن کامل30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Measurement of attenuation lengths of hadrons in air showers with KASCADE
Different methods are applied to derive the attenuation lengths of hadrons in air showers with the KASCADE experiment. A data set of unaccompanied hadrons is used (where only a hadron is registered with a calorimeter) as well as full air showers, where also the number of electrons and muons is registered with a field array. The different attenuation lengths obtained are discussed.
متن کاملKASCADE extensive air shower experiment
The main aim of the KASCADE extensive air shower (EAS) experiment is the determination of the chemical composition of cosmic rays in the energy range around and above the knee at Ek ≈ 3 PeV. A large number of observables is measured simultaneously for each individual event, by the combination of various detection techniques for the electromagnetic, the muonic, and the hadronic component of the ...
متن کامل30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Features of the S(500) distribution for large air showers detected with the KASCADE-Grande array
For the experimental conditions of the KASCADE-Grande experiment, the density of charged particles of large air showers (EAS) at the distance of about 500 m from the shower core S(500) has been shown by detailed simulation studies to be an approximate energy estimator, being nearly independent of the mass of the primary particle. This report presents some first experimentally observed features ...
متن کاملMuon Density Measurements with the KASCADE Central Detector
Frequency distributions of local muon densities in high-energy extensive air-showers (EAS) are presented as signature of the primary cosmic ray energy spectrum in the knee region. Together with the gross shower variables like shower core position, angle of incidence, and the shower sizes, the KASCADE experiment is able to measure local muon densities for two different muon energy thresholds. Th...
